Advanced GPS Features
You can purchase several GPS units that will do an efficient job of taking you from one place to another for under $300-400. Here are a few advanced options that could add several hundred more to the price tag.
Waypoints. Unit allows you to specify multiple destinations. Device then takes you from one to the next.
Multiple destination routing. Unit will plan the most efficient route to visit all the destinations.
Text to Speech. Voice prompt uses street names. For example ‘turn right on main st.’ instead of just ‘take next right’.
Bluetooth capability. Allows you to use the unit to make hands free calls with your cell phone. Some units will dial the number of businesses directly from the POI database.
Route Avoidance. Options that allow you to avoid toll roads, construction etc.
Display Speed Limits. Displays the speed limit of the road you are currently on.
High sensitivity GPS Receivers. SiRF Star III equipped receivers can get a fix on satellites faster, lock on to weaker signals and have lower power consumption.
MP3 player. Unit stores and plays MP3s and audio books
Wireless FM transmission. Transmits the audio from spoken directions, MP3s/audio books and your cell phone thru your car stereo.
Trip Log. Keeps and displays a log of your driving history.
Car Locator. When you disconnect the unit and take it with you, it marks the location, then you can ask the unit to guide you back to where you parked.
Add-ons.
Custom POI databases. You can purchase many different databases from traffic cameras to your favorite store locations.
Traffic Reports/Avoidance. Subscription service that will automatically route you around traffic tie-ups and construction.
Satellite Radio. Unit doubles as a satellite radio receiver. You will need a subscription of course.

Speech recognition. Soon some units will allow you to speak commands instead of using the touch screen or buttons.
Live database. Google has announced plans to partner with GPS manufacturers in providing a live POI database, thereby providing the latest information and eliminating the need for updates
to the POI database.
